John Young trained at the Middlesex Hospital, University of London. He was appointed as a consultant geriatrician in Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK in 1986. He took on responsibilities as a clinical manager and developed numerous new services including an elderly care assessment unit; a stroke unit; and an ortho-geriatric unit. Research interests became embedded in the clinical work and included evaluations (mostly by RCT) of day hospitals, stroke care and intermediate care services.
In 2005 he was appointed to a new position as Head of the Academic Unit of Elderly Care & Rehabilitation, University of Leeds, Institute of Health Sciences and Bradford Institute for Health Research based at Bradford. This unit is now one of the largest elderly care applied health research units in the UK and has an established record of addressing key, clinically relevant questions in elderly care and stroke. In 2009 he was awarded the Lady Illingworth prize for “outstanding contributions” to services for older people. John was seconded to NHS England as National Clinical Director for Integration and Frail Elderly.
John retired in December 2018.
