John is a physiotherapist by background but has been involved in health service research for many years. He completed his PhD, entitled ‘A randomised controlled trial of community physiotherapy for patients more than one year post-stroke’, in 2001.

Research projects he has been involved with include a randomised trial of physiotherapy for patients late after stroke, single centre and multi-centre randomised trials of post-acute rehabilitation care in community hospitals for older people, the feasibility of Dementia Care Mapping to improve care for physically ill older people in hospital and two National Institute for Health and Care Research-funded Programme Grants for Applied Health Research investigating delirium prevention for older people in hospital and development and preliminary testing of strategies to enhance routine physical activity in care homes.
