Tom Crocker is Senior Research Fellow in the Academic Unit for Ageing and Stroke Research. Tom has a special interest in systems approaches to health services research and the meaning and measurement of quality of life. He has substantial experience with qualitative and quantitative methods, and particular expertise in systematic review methods. Tom recently co-led an HTA frailty-themed evidence synthesis of community-based complex interventions to enhance the independence of older people.
Tom is lead author for three Cochrane reviews: physical rehabilitation for older people in long-term care, information provision for stroke patients and their carers, and an overview of non‐pharmacological interventions for longer‐term stroke survivors or their carers. He has a coordinating role on other reviews within the Ageing and Stroke Research team.
Previously, Tom has worked on the development and evaluation of a complex intervention to improve quality of life for people in the longer-term after stroke (LoTS2Care). This work incorporated systematic and scoping reviews, intervention mapping, participatory action research and a trial with embedded process evaluation.
Tom is co-supervising Louisa Burton’s PhD study “Talking about recovery after stroke: How do we do it and how can we do better?”
Tom has a PhD studying the organisation of renal anaemia management and its relationship to performance in UK renal centres using a case study approach informed by ethnography and health informatics
