Anne Kay

Oncology Research Sister

I have worked for the NHS for 30 years plus. I have had a variety of nursing posts ranging from general medicine, coronary care, palliative care and general oncology. I had the privilege of working at Cookridge Hospital caring for patients receiving radiotherapy. For the past 15 years I have worked part time in oncology research here at BTHFT. I have cared for patients that have been willing to partake in clinical research studies. My main portfolio is colorectal and breast studies. I have cared for patients on the SCOT trial which is a colorectal study. This particular study randomised patients to either 12 week or 24 weeks of chemotherapy. The aim of the study was to prove that giving 12 weeks of chemotherapy was just as effective as receiving the routine 24 week treatment. The collected analysed data has changed practice within the oncology treatment of some colorectal cancers here within the trust, thus reducing patients time spent receiving treatment and cost saving for the trust.
